What is Semaglutide (Wegovy® )?
Semaglutide was FDA approved in June of 2021 and is thus far the most effective medication for weight loss in the United States. It has been a game-changer for medical weight loss patients, and we are bringing it to you at affordable cost via specialty compounding pharmacy as it is currently not typically covered by most insurance plans.
Wegoy® is the brand name for Semaglutide. Semaglutide is a member of a class of drugs that have been used for diabetes treatment since 2005 - GLP1-RAs (glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists). Semaglutide works by mimicking the naturally occurring hormone in the human body called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) . It targets areas of the brain that regulate appetite and food intake and induces a sensation of ‘feeling full’ which helps control cravings and ultimately promote weight loss.
What's the difference between Ozempic® and Wegovy®?
Both Ozempic® and Wegovy® are brand names for the same medication: semaglutide. There are differences in dosing between the two.
How is Semaglutide administered?
The medication given by subcutaneous injection (under the skin) in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. We realize that some are hesitant to use injections, but the injection is via a very SMALL needle and will not typically cause any substantial pain (rather a mild sting). It is a weekly injection (given once per week) which makes it convenient for those who don’t remember daily pill making them more likely to adhere to the treatment plan.

What are the side effects?
The main side effects are gastrointestinal: nausea, diarrhea, and less commonly vomiting. In the clinical trials leading to drug approval (STEP 1 trial) these side effects were generally mild to moderate and, for most patients, improved over time. The medication dose is increased gradually under the supervision of our healthcare providers to reduce these gastrointestinal side effects.

Are there people who should not take Semaglutide?
GLP-1 receptor agonists should not be taken during pregnancy , if you have a history of pancreatitis or a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or a disorder called multiple endocrine neoplasia. Patients who have diabetes and take insulin need careful (preferably in person) monitoring to avoid low blood sugar and thus we are not accepting patients who use insulin at this time.

Do you prescribe other weight loss medications?
Yes we do prescribe other weight loss medications. The nurse practitioner will perform an evaluation to determine the most appropriate option for each patient.

Ready to get started?
The first step is to determine your starting point: take time to assess your emotional and physical health, as well as your daily habits since we believe holistic perspective is important to address overweight/obesity.
A physical assessment includes weighing yourself and measuring your waist circumference. The body mass index (BMI) is calculated from your height and weight (calculator 1 and calculator 2).
